Thursday, July 30. 2009Internationalization in User Generated Enviorments
User generated content in multilingual enviorments brings up new internationalizations problems,
in a social network or other enviorment with a lot of User Generated content, I18N could not be sticked strictly to the user, and even a content or discussion could be spreaden through different languages.
On usual websites a language is assigned to the frontend user, also on Youtube where it causes some problems.
I always recieve Mails like
Komentarze do filmu „>videoname<” Comentario sobre ">videoname<" publicado Reactie van >userwhopostedcomment< op ,>videoname<' Nouveau commentaire sur ">videoname<" Kommentar zu ">videoname<" gepostet" gepostetWhich all mean your video ... has been commented by ..., but it´s alsways in the default language to the commentor, no matter what my language is and no matter which language the comment is Written in. Comments itself are mostly written in english or the language the video is in. A solution could be to send it just in the recipient´s default language instead the actual frontend language, it would just make it easier for the recipient. Jeroen - Moie Video, echt Leuk Tommy - Why are all the Comments in Dutch Franz - Die Holländer finden ihre Sprache so Toll Antje - Ihre Sprache ist auch Supertoll Joost - Duits is alleen voor Moffen Tommy - In English Please Joost - German is for Kauts Only Franz - Geh doch Käse essen du KaaskoppAs you see users could communicate through different Languages, and maybe they even like it and switch Languages during a conversation, if you wanna run your site with an international flavour this is acceptable. Language Detection Language Detection could be usefull, to translate auto detection for example, but you could also hide content with Language Detection For Example: I got a Guestbook entry on my Dutch Netlog, somebody commentet the guestbook in German with something like "Hi ich habe ein bischen Deutsch gelernt, Wie geht es dir? viele grüsse". This entry were hidden cause it weren´t written in my actual frontend Language (Dutch), but actually i had choosen German as native language in my profile. So if you use something like Language Detection to hide content from foreign Languages, you must consider a user could be able to understand more than one language. Hiding content from the user is mostly a bad decission, cause even if the user is not able to read information might be usefull. The better way is always to sign the entry as an entry with different language and offer automated translation possibility. Where it could make sense to hide content is if a user is doing a general search on contents, at least in order of the search results. With some surprise today i was reading about Googles new web browser on a general news site
As far there is only a comic released about it and google announced to put a beta downloadable for today. First Official document was a comic describing the Browser Development and features.
Google gived official reasons for the Browser that they were afraid that Microsoft could integrate it´s search engine more to the Internet Explorer, but Google was already founding millions to the Firefox foundation. So maybe their real intense was to integrate there services to a browser in a way which would be too much for the Firefox Browser. If you take a look at the comic you seem a new service of malware of fishing detection, of cause in principial it is not a bad thing if your browser warns you if a site is malicious or not, but it is also mean that someone in this case google is deciding which sites are good and which one are bad. This mechanism could be easily used to determine sites as "bad content" maybe becouse of harmful information like porn to children or gouverment critical sites to chinese people. So if google is able to put there browser as a leader out to the web they would not only be able to control which search results a user is getting, they also might have control over what the user is browsing that might be an dangerous point of information control. In further surely they will use it to put own services like youtube, orkut, google search, google mail more in front to other party services wich will extend their domination on market. At all the technical concept of the Google Chrome Browser doesn´t seem that bad, so i would test it out at least i would have to to see my sites working on it if they are getting a wide market range. But finally Googles Chrome Browser has one target, more domination on the web. It is not grabbing for IE users only but also for FireFox users and trying to bind web users to Googles services. Maybe google browser is just a first part and soon they are going to release a Google OS, maybe a slimed down Linux or BSD mostly optimized with a simple window manager for use of Google APS and Google Chrome Browser. Wednesday, June 18. 2008FireFox 3.0 first contact
Today after the Dutch Football match i decided to join the Speadfirefox initiative and Download my version of Firefox 3.0 at the 17th July even if i don´t have the time for exessive testing at the moment. All my sites work proper on the new FireFox version but i can not try out some internal Webapplications, which have a lot of XML rendering stuff inside at the moment.
First impression is a lot of "Klickibunty" the adress bar shows history with title,
ohh yeah that´s the new killer feature but doesn´t improve anything to me. I didn´t test Firebug yet or if any of the other 40 best extensions for FireFox work but at least GoogleToolbar is working and all my history, password and bookmark data has been imported without doing anything manual.
But one possibly problem for JavaScript Development were already approaching. Popup windows always have an addressbar so maybe that might have an effect of the window size.
The Statusbar is disabled by default, but you can turn it on easily.
Finally i didn´t find anything really good or really bad so Ill need a bit more testing with this client
